Summer storage for Texas Tech students: a simple plan for move-out

Heading home for the summer, studying abroad, or switching apartments in August? Here is when to book, what size to get, what to store and what to take home, and how to split a unit with roommates without the drama.

Your summer storage timeline

Exact dates change every year, so check your housing contract or lease and the university's academic calendar for your move-out deadline.

  1. March to April: reserve your unit. Lock in a size and location before the end-of-semester rush. Decide now if you are sharing with roommates.

  2. Two weeks before finals: start packing. Box up winter clothes, extra bedding, and anything you will not need during exams.

  3. Finals week: load the unit. Book a truck or borrow one early, and go in the morning before the afternoon heat.

  4. August: move back in. Plan your pickup day as soon as you know your move-in date, since August is busy too.

Prep tips for a Lubbock summer

Mini fridge

Unplug it a day early, let it defrost, wipe it out, and dry it completely. Store it with the door propped open so it does not grow mold or smell.

Electronics

Summer heat inside a closed unit can damage screens and batteries. Store TVs and consoles in climate control, or take them home.

Clothes and bedding

Wash everything and make sure it is fully dry. Pack it in totes or vacuum bags to keep out dust during windy months.

Sharing a unit with roommates

Splitting one bigger unit usually costs less per person than everyone renting their own. A little planning keeps it simple.

  1. Pick one person for the rental. One name goes on the agreement and that person is responsible for payment. Ask the location if others can be added as authorized users.

  2. Agree on the split up front. Decide who pays what and set up automatic payments to the renter so nobody falls behind.

  3. Color-code your boxes. Give each person a tape color or label so pickup day is fast and nothing goes home with the wrong person.

  4. Set a pickup plan. Agree on who empties the unit and when, so the last person is not stuck paying for another month.

Common questions

When should students reserve summer storage in Lubbock?

A few weeks before finals at the latest. Small units near campus fill up fast during May move-out, so reserving in March or April gives you the best choice of sizes and locations.

Can I rent a storage unit for just the summer?

Many facilities rent month to month, so you can store for just the summer and move out in August. Confirm the rental terms with the location before you reserve.

What size storage unit do I need for a dorm room?

Most dorm rooms fit in a 5x5 or 5x10. If you are sharing with a roommate, a 5x10 usually holds both rooms. Three or four roommates can often share a 10x10.

Do I need climate controlled storage for the summer?

If you are storing electronics, a mattress, wood furniture, or anything that melts, yes. Lubbock summers get very hot, and a closed unit gets hotter than the air outside.

Can my parents rent the unit for me?

Yes. A parent can rent the unit and pay for it. Ask the location about adding you as an authorized user so you can get in on your own.
